Hey, I hope you're ready for some awesome, because I've gone out on a limb to bring you some. (some 'awesome' that is.)
Ayreon is more of a project than a band.
The mastermind behind it all is Arjen Anthony Lucassen. He is a dutch fellow who writes, essentially, rock operas. He asks singers from bands that are already established to appear on his albums as characters. Some notable artists that he has worked with are Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), James Labrie (Dream Theater), Heather Findlay (Mostly Autumn), and Devon Townshend (Strapping Young Lad). Needless to say, some songs on the album feature many singers (sometimes 10+ if it's very epic!) and sometimes there is 'dialogue singing'.
If Michelle Payne reads this, download these, as I'm sure you'll like them!
Here are some tracks:
Day 2: Isolation
Day 10: Memories
Pain of salvation is fronted by the genius of a man, Daniel Gildenlow. Boasting two, rather viruostic, guitarists, Pain of Salvation is quite a powerhouse. Only adding to that is the exquisite vocals of Daniel Gildenlow. This man can do everything ever with his voice. Ever. He also attended a writing school, if that is worth anything, and is a very well educated / intelligent fellow. They are rather progressive, and metal, making them progressive metal. It's not as if they never slow it down or funk it up, though! Just check out the first riff in 'People Passing By'!
Pain of Salvation Songs:
01 ! (foreword)
People Passing By
If you are into anthing artsy, or gut-bustingly heavy, check out Opeth. I hope I didn't scare anyone with a preference for softer music away, though, because 'windowpane' is an absolutely beuatiful song. Mikael Akerfeldt is the guitarist / vocalist of this progressive death metal band. Even though that is an open-ended title, I still don't feel is does justice to the diversity of Opeth. The vocals just might be the most interesting thing in Opeth, (not to take away from the wonderful, fresh, twisting guitar attack, though.) as Mikael both sings and growls. The stark contrast between the two extremes is astounding. I might add as well, that Mike has one of the most soothing voices ever in a death metal band.
Tracks by Opeth:
Windowpane
The Drapery Falls
Did you say you were interested in virtuostic-prog-power-metal? Because Pagan's mind is just that, really. Jorn Viggo Lofstad regularly blesses a deprived guitarist's ear with tasteful, yet blisteringly fast solos! Nils Rue also has one of the largest male vocal ranges I've heard. They aren't pagans, despite their name, but they are very open minded and their lyrics focus on mythological, space fantasy type things.
Pagan's Mind Tunes:
Aegean Shores
Through Osiris' Eyes
Of course, I'm sure you're up for some happy swedish power metal, too! Sonata Arctica is so ...bouncy? Happy-heavy type music. Hmmm, this isn't an accurate description, really. You'll have to take a listen. Tony Kakko, the vocalist, just makes you happy to listen to him. The drummer ain't bad, either.
Sing-songs:
San Sabastian
Weballergy
Dream Theater. The band I ranted and raved about to every guy in my cabin. John Petrucci is my biggest inspiration when I pick up my guitar. Every single member of this band is rediculously talented, and not just as an individual. And so Epic, too! If you listen to the dance of eternity, you will be assaulted by polyrhythms, odd time meters, and a fun carnival song. Dream Theater is the flagship prog metal band. And they're not overrated. That would be impossible.

If anyone else is feeling up to it, go ahead and share some bands you like, too!

Here are some mp3s of artists I admire, and that I would love to spread around to my fellow OELCers. I've limited it to 2 mp3's per artist in hopes that you will buy the CD if you like it, rather than download (steal) the whole discography of the said band.
If you'd like to discuss / debate views on downloading, please post another thread, as I'd like this one to be for talking about the artists I'm showing everyone, mmmk?
